My husband and I launched a product today!

It’s a free tool that allows you to create a clipping mask between two images, a frequent need that most designers, marketers, and bloggers have but can only find in paid tools like Photoshop and Procreate.

And how to collect feedback to improve them.

“You cannot manage what you cannot measure. “

— Peter F. Drucker

Analysts spend a good chunk of time building dashboards. The goal is to make basic insights discovery as self-serving and as automated as possible to avoid too many ad-hoc analysis. However, while the impact of other parts of the job (e.g. experimentation, modeling, strategic recommendations, etc.) can be easily shown afterward; the success of dashboards is often harder to measure. There are just so many questions to ask when considering if a dashboard works or not, so often people don’t ask them at all.

But the danger of…

Tree Chart with Hierarchical Data in D3

When I was learning D3, although there are a lot of great resources to learn from, I can rarely find detailed code explanations for me to fully understand how everything works, making it difficult to recreate a chart on my own without additional searches.

So I want to fill this whitespace with a series of D3 (v4) line-by-line code explanations for each chart I create, sharing with you what I’ve figured out. Comment if you want me to create a video series!

Let’s kick off this series by building a tree chart like the one below.

Make your teams fall in love with A/B testing

I will spare you an entire post on why running controlled experiments is the gold standard for data-driven decision making or how to run them (so many books and posts on this). If you are reading this, you would already know that controlled experiments (or A/B testing, multivariate testing) are one of the most effective ways to make causal inferences, to scientifically validate most ideas.

In the early stage of a business, it is okay to base decisions on HiPPO (Highest paid person’s opinion) and past experiences, given the lack of data. …

Do you know you can monitor stock prices or earnings per share within Google sheet?

I didn’t until I saw it in a tweet a couple of days ago. You can simply type a query like =GOOGLEFINANCE("GOOG", "price", DATE(2019,1,1), DATE(2019,12,31), "DAILY") into a google sheet to populate the data through Google finance (documentation here).

With the stock data handy, I was inspired to put together a stock tracker dashboard with Tableau (you’ve probably noticed I am very into neon colors recently).

P.S. You can view the interactive dashboard here.

#Dupealert is a series highlighting our favorite beauty dupes at beautydupes. These are products comparable in results but differ in prices and other qualities. We are giving you all the info, but you should go for whatever suits your preferences.

The Tatcha Dewy Serum has only been launched for two months and we’ve already seen raving reviews. Annie Kreighbaum, the Glossier boy brow herself, praised this product to be one of her favorite products in her podcast Eyewitness Beauty (highly recommend this podcast btw). Our ears perked up when she added that it is the perfect dupe of her other…

This post is personal. I’ve tried nearly all the acne patches on the market. Many don’t do anything other than making you not pick at pimples as much by covering them up. But the ones that do work are miraculous. You know those zits that won’t pop or about to pop and you are afraid to do so because it…

If you read through its ingredient list, you will see what ultimately makes the La Mer moisturizer special and expensive is its sea kelp ingredient that heals and soothes your skin; and what actually moisturizes your skin are cheap ingredients like mineral oil, petrolatum, and glycerin. So if you just want a moisturizer, don’t spend $345 on this 2oz jar…

Don Norman, the acclaimed author of the book, The Design of Everyday Things, defined the concept of affordance as “perceivable action possibilities, i.e., only actions which users consider possible.”

He believes good designs should have affordance. For example, a well-designed door can clearly indicate if you should push or pull without the words written on it.

I found the best-designed ads to have the affordance quality as well. The only perceivable action after seeing this ad by KitKat?

Take a break, have a KitKat!

If you ask a dermatologist what’s the one thing everyone should have in their skincare routine, they would say three, sunscreen, vitamin c, and drum roll… retinol. It’s the most popular and one of the most effective ingredients in anti-aging treatment. Because of its effectiveness, it can be harsh on the skin and is recommended to be introduced to your…
